Fourth for Williams in Portimão Portugal Match Cup
27 June 2010
Team GAC Pindar’s World Match Racing sailor, Ian Williams finished fourth at the Portimão Portugal Match Cup today, earning a further 12 points but sliding to fifth place in the World Match Racing Tour standings.
Williams, the former Double ISAF World Match Racing Champion got off to a promising start to the event, winning 6 out of his first 8 matches. He finished the round-robin stages with a total of 7 points from 11, however was deducted a point for damage caused during his match against Sweden’s Bjorn Hansen (Gill Global Team), to leave him sixth in the table.
Following the completion of the round-robin on Saturday, Williams defeated Francesco Bruni (Azzurra) 3-1 in the quarter finals, before facing Tovar Mirsky (Mirsky Racing Team) on Sunday, who put a 3-0 end to his Portimão Portugal Match Cup hopes.
The event was won by Peter Gilmour (YANMAR Racing) who beat Mirsky in an all Australian final, earning him 25 points and boosting his Tour standing to fourth place, whilst Williams lost the Petit final in the single race decider to Adam Minoprio (ETNZ/BlackMatch Racing).
Despite a seventh place finish this week, Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team still maintains a strong lead in the Tour standings on 71 points, followed by Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZ/BlackMatch Racing on 54 and Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team on 48. Williams and his Team GAC Pindar crew have 42 points.
With four of ten stages of the 2010 World Match Racing Tour now complete, the action resumes at the STENA Match Cup Sweden in Marstrand from July 5-11.
