Day 1 – St Moritz Match Race
Team GAC Pindar’s World Match Racing Sailor Ian Williams got off to a strong start on Day 1 of the St. Moritz Match Race, winning four of his five races and leading the standings alongside defending Champion Adam Minoprio (ENTZ/ Black Match).
Double ISAF World Match Racing Champion Williams began the round robin stage with victory over local sailor Jerome Clerc (Team CER Geneve). Williams’ dominance continued with three further wins, including victory over fellow Brit Ben Ainslie (Team Origin). In a tight contest against Ainslie, Williams held a narrow lead, and despite a penalty turn to take in the final stages, a gust 150m from the finish line allowed Williams to extend his lead and claim victory.
In the final race of the day, Williams was narrowly defeated by current tour leader Mathieu Richard (French Match Racing Team), with just one metre separating the boats across the finish line. The remaining round robin races will continue today.
