What is Aluminum Nitride

What is the term Aluminum Nitride?

Awarded for its outstanding conductivity to heat and electrical insulating properties, aluminum nitride makes an ideal material for creating semiconductors. In light emitter lighting technology, it can also be used as a heat source.

Qualities of the Aluminum Nitride

Aluminum nitride is an inorganic mixture of nitrogen and Aluminum. It is part of the structure of the wurtzite crystalline structure and has a spectrum of 6 eV at the temperature of ambient. This makes it ideal for use in the field of deep ultraviolet optoelectronics. It is also utilized as an electronic circuit carrier in semiconductors.

Aluminum Nitride is a dense technical ceramic material available in thin and thick versions. It is produced using the carbothermal reduction method. But, this process could be costly, therefore an alternative process for preparation of powder that is less expensive should be considered. Different sintering equipments were employed to increase the density of the powder to specifications.

Application of Aluminum Nitride

Aluminum Nitride can be used to make optical material like nanotubes for chemical sensors. It can also be used as the substrate material for silicon processing. It is highly resistant erosion, corrosion and molten metals. It is stable even at high temperatures under an inert gas atmosphere.

Aluminum nitride is discovered in any metal. It is a gray-blue to white powder. It is soluble in water and inorganic acids. But, it's unstable in hydrogen atmospheres. It is also extremely flammable.

It is utilized in mobile phones to create filtering of radio frequencies. It is also used in robotics and medical imaging. These properties are employed in bulk acoustic resonators.

It was reported that the bulk of current research is on the creation of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) leds that operate in the wavelength of the ultraviolet which means that the wavelength of light is 250 nanometers. In May 2006, it was announced that an inefficient diode could emit light with one 210nm wavelength. A single crystal of aluminum nitride features an energy-gap of 6.2eV calculated by the vacuum ultraviolet reflectance. Theoretically, the energy gap allows some waves having wavelengths on the order of 200 nanometers to pass through. However, when it comes to implementing it commercially, there are many challenges that need to be solved. Aluminum nitride can be found in optoelectronics. It is used as inductive layers in optical storage interfaces and electronic chips, substrates for chip drivers with high thermal conductivity, and military applications.

Extending epitaxially on AlN crystals is used in surface acoustic waves detectors because of the properties of the AlN piezoelectric phenomenon. The detectors are positioned onto the silicon substrate. There are only a handful of places that can reliably make these thin films.

The aluminum nitride materials have a high capacity at room temperature, as well as high temperatures, and a very low expansion coefficient, as well as good thermal conductivity, and can be used as heat exchangers in structures that require high temperatures.

Utilizing the corrosion resistance of aluminum, iron, as well as alloys made of other metals Aluminum nitride ceramics may serve as crucibles and casting molds materials for smelting Al, Cu, Ag, Pb, and other metals.
